The waiter came over and dropped the bill on the table… $83.72.

I put my debit card inside of the cheque and held out hope that the bank wouldn’t decline the transaction.

We went home and I checked my bank account. $27 remaining. 

It was September of 2019 and I had just graduated from University. I had no job prospects and an online business selling fitness programs that was doing $2,000 per month in revenue, and I had to break off 45% per payout to my partner.

There I was… dead broke, freshly 22 years old, with a finance degree that I was never going to be able to use because like most, I didn’t want to be a spreadsheet monkey crunching numbers 100 hours a week for next to nothing.

“So… how’s it going here? The guy told me they make a ton of money.” I said.

“It’s going pretty well, look at this.” My friend responded.

He pulls up his paystub from last month.

It wasn’t $4,000.

$16,582. Gross. After taxes his net take home was a little over $10,000.

I was in disbelief.

I signed the paperwork the next day and a few days later I showed up at the office, with $27 still in my bank account.
